to be a wildflower

What does being a wildflower mean to you?

A thought I often think on when I “consider the lilies” mentioned in Luke 12:27 or Matthew 6:28. Or when I hear the words of the song “you belong among the wildflowers”….

What does that mean…to belong among the wildflowers?

Well…when I consider the characteristics of a wildflower, it inspires me. I would be happy to ~belong~ among the wildflowers.

Wildflowers are resilient. Able to thrive in any environment or situation. Bloom beautifully wherever they are planted. Never striving or toiling. Free from burdens of perfection or comparison. Carefree. Growing hidden in a field without the need to be noticed. Knowing their Creator sees and cares and has made them beautiful.

The verses mentioned above have brought me so much peace and encouragement the past few years, but even more now as I raise my own little wildflower daughter. Those thoughts and characteristics are a perspective I hope to teach and pass on to her as she grows.

You belong among the wildflowers

Those simple, but very famous lyrics, are somehow very powerful. I think it’s the word “belong” and how we all have a longing to belong. I know speaking for myself, I have often felt I never really “fit in. I think everyone goes through the middle school/high school phase of wanting to fit in with the “cool kids”, the “popular” group…and I believe a little bit of that longing can creep even into adulthood. While we may not strive to be one of the “popular” kids, I believe we all crave a sense of community. We were made for community.

These might be thoughts for a whole other blog post, but I wanted to share for anyone who has ever felt they just don’t fit in… consider the wildflowers. Consider the never-striving, never-toiling wildflowers. Consider their beauty that is still beautiful even hidden in a field where no one may see. Consider their Creator who sees and cares for them. You belong among those wildflower, created by the same God who made and sees and cares for you. And I pray that brings you a sense of peace and the belonging you crave.

“Look at all the beautiful flowers of the field. They don’t work or toil. If God has clothed the meadow, won’t he provide for you what you need? So then, forsake your worries! Doesn’t your Heavenly Father already know the things your body requires? Above all, chase after the realm of God’s kingdom. Refuse to worry about tomorrow, but deal with each challenge that comes your way, one day at a time. Tomorrow will take care of itself. ”
